Surviving Bear Island - Tufted Rugs
This is from a scene in Surviving Bear Island where Tom watches a bear fish for salmon, trying to learn and think through his own survival tactics.
The idea for me in the Bear Island series is to capture the danger Tom is in without missing the magic of the deep sense of place author Paul Greci captures in the book.
I'm also continually playing with visual ideas that enhance enjoyment of the story without taking away the reader's ability to create their own visual imagery. Throughout the series, I've drawn on folk art patterns to create the color and movement I want to see without falling into a realism that could rob the reader of their fun.
I imagine a bunch of school age kids using these rugs as sitting mats while Paul reads from the book.
