Why We Fall
Why We Fall
Handwoven Tapestry
27" x 35"
2025

I've been thinking about this image for a long time - my first sketches of it were done in the dark of January. I'm thinking here about the extreme vulnerability dancers experience on stage and connecting that back to the combination of daring and fragility that's simply part of getting out of bed in the morning as a human.

The title comes from a line in a song - "why we dance and why we fall/it's a wonder we know anything at all."

We throw ourselves at things in life, always not knowing. And while we're in free fall, the landscape we thought we knew fragments and comes apart.

All that being said, this isn't a dark piece for me, just a chaotic one.
